Virtual Private Sever Overview |
|
|
Virtual Private Servers (VPS), also commonly referred to as Virtual Dedicated Servers (VDS) or just Virtual Servers are server side operating system and software technologies that permit a single high powered physical machine to be divided into multiple logical machines. Each logical machine or Virtual Machine serves from a software standpoint as an independent server capable of running independent operating system instances with unique software configurations. The underlying fact that each of these logical virtual machine instances provides a unique environment gives ProVPS room to put a lot of administrative power in your hands.
Purpose:
Traditional Shared Hosting environments limit many aspects of web and application hosting as they only permit user level processes access. System users have fewer rights to control the operating system environments and certain programs are only available to root or super user level access classes. In traditional single environments permitting increased access at large could only be done at the price of jeopardizing system security. In the past a solution for those seeking increased accessibility then came only by obtaining a dedicated server which comes at often exorbitant costs when compared to the operating requirements of its user(s) or application(s). Today however, utilizing this technology, VPS instances can be used to bridge the technological and financial gap between user level shared environment needs and dedicated server requirements. Those looking to break the confining chains of there existing hosts machine configuration restrictions will find themselves relived with there own private environment, premising additional resources and added control that can grow as they do.
Division:
Previously, Virtual Private Servers were described as a single physical
machine divided into several virtual machines creating virtual
dedicated severs. This logic can also be applied to how resources are
divided in that physical machine and allocated to the various plans.
VPS allocations are treated in units, each unit represents a certain
amount of resources on the physical machine, and each plan may consume
as many units as its allocated resources. This can be thought of as
physical rack mount servers, some servers consume more physical rack
space then others and in that manner some VPS packages consume more
host resources then another. The diagram adjacent this text depicts
allocation of the various VPS packages as if they were physical servers
in a physical data center rack. Note that the host processes consumes
some of the physical machines resources while other resources are
allocated to the various plans. Larger plans have a larger share of the
physical machine then smaller plans, and as such less of the larger
plans are allocated to a single physical server then smaller plans. The
unit numbers represented here are intended for visualization purposes
only, actual allocation takes various factors into account that are
beyond the scope of this text however the ratio of VPS allocation on
any physical host is noted in the host specs section of the virtual
private server plans page.
Utility of a VPS:
As you may have already derived, there is much to be said in regards to
the usefulness of a virtual dedicated server. In the majority of cases,
anything can be done on a virtual server that could be done on a
dedicated server or shared server. The following is just a few ideas of
what you can do with your ProVPS Virtual Dedicated Server:
Web Hosting:
One of the most popular uses for a virtual dedicated server is to
provide web site hosting. Virtual private servers make great
environments for midlevel or corporate websites, may of which have
grown to require specific configuration only available with root
permission. Those looking to start offering websites and web hosting
services to others will find our packages make a great stating point
both technically and finically. Scalable plans make it easy to grow as
your build your client base, and control panel add-ons such as cPanel.
take most the work out of configuring a machine. What better place to
start your new business ventures then a VPS from Provps.
Application Hosting:
Using Virtual Server platforms, organizations can realize the benefits
of there mission critical software solutions without the costs and
staffing commitment of an in-house installation. Outsourcing your
application deployment holds several key advantages fro your
organization, including less demand on the IT department and a smaller
investment in hardware. Solid hardware solutions and burstable multi
homed bandwidth provide extended stability as well as public IP address
space often not available in local office installations.
Development / Test Environments:
With ProVPS Virtual Private Server, you can keep multiple OS instances,
shutting them down and boot them up with a few clicks or key strokes.
Consol access permits you to manipulate network interfaces without
loosing remote connectivity to the environment. ProVPS supplies a
verity of features that virtually put a half rack full of test servers
in the palm of your hand.
Educational Outpost:
Whether you are new to Linux or just experimenting with a new
distribution Virtual Private Server make great learning environments. A
multitude of distributions are available to try, and our unique control
panel makes them easy to load and reload time and again.
